On Friday 8 July, the conference by Professor Salvatore Buontempo, INFN research director of Naples and nuclear physicist at CERN, entitled “CERN: Elementary Particle Physics - Discoveries and New Technologies” recorded a large turnout of the public.

The event organized by INTENT, BYTEST and the Youth for Science Association presented basic notions on particle physics and the tools needed to develop these studies.

The professor introduced by explaining the function of basic research and then illustrating the current state of knowledge on the smallest components of the subject.

Then he presented the technology of the LHC particle accelerator and the details of the experimental apparatus on which he works, the CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid).
